Founding Product Marketer

Remote (United Kingdom) +9

We are building a new kind of customer service tool for modern, developer-focused companies. A beautiful, lightning-fast customer support tool, backed by the same API you can use directly.

We have a small number of early customers we’re really excited about. Now our task is to find more of them, make sure they understand and get value from Plain in the same way, and ensure they turn into happy, long-term customers.

In this role, you will join as the very first marketing hire in our small team, and work closely with our Co-Founder & CEO Simon in building and scaling go-to-market at Plain. You’ll join a small, commercially savvy team of engineers and designers who care about our positioning just as deeply as the code we write.

What you'll do

This is the first marketing role in the company. We’re looking for someone who excels in product marketing and is excited about the prospect of building all areas of marketing at a company like ours. We want great marketing to be one of the things Plain is known for, and this position will be central in making that happen.

In this wide-ranging role, you will:

  • Build and execute our 0-to-1 marketing strategy. We want support teams, product teams and engineers in the world’s most admired software companies to be our champions. You’ll help us build everything external-facing at Plain to achieve that goal.
  • Help us talk to the right people in a way that resonates. We have a customer segment we want to focus on, but what’s the most effective way to explain what we are and what sets us apart? You’ll help us make sure we find the right ICPs, and talk to them about our product in an authentic, compelling, and most importantly consistent way – across all our touchpoints.
  • Make sure that each new feature we launch, lands. We ship at a fast pace, but don’t do a good enough job at sharing and celebrating what we ship openly or closing the loop on adoption after the fact. You’ll look after everything from helping us set the right expectations with customers about upcoming changes, ensuring we make the most of each launch, through to ensuring we track and follow up on the adoption of even the smallest product improvements.
  • Get more people to learn about Plain. We want to become known as the authority on all things developer support. We spend a bit of time writing on plain.com/blog, but we want to do more of it, more frequently and intentionally. You’ll help us build on this foundation, do more of it, and better.

This is a great fit if you…

  • Have a strong product marketing background, but have owned other parts of marketing like content marketing or growth marketing
  • Enjoy being both hands-on and strategic; rather just than one or the other. You can spot what matters most, and are able to quickly translate that into your day-to-day, and are comfortable leaving some fires burning
  • Enjoy writing. We don’t expect you to be a full-time content writer, but you should know what good copy looks like and be able to iterate on everything from website headlines and product updates without relying on one
  • Have an interest in all things B2B SaaS and customer support, and have worked on a self-serve/sales-supported and/or developer-focused product
  • Are exceptionally detailed without trading off on speed. No typo should escape you, and you should be able to work to a high standard under pressure

This won't be the right role if you…

  • Aren’t comfortable building from zero to 1. We need to build a strong foundation on which to scale and are really starting on the ground floor.
  • Want to solely focus on strategy or building a team. This will be a hands-on role, especially early on.
  • Expect all the perks of a big company. We’re a seed stage startup and are competitive in what we offer at our stage, but it’s a different role and opportunity than working at an established tech company.
